Our story began in the year 1852, with the establishment of The Norwich and District Provident Permanent Benefit Building and Freehold Land Society - Later renamed as the somewhat more manageable Norwich Building Society, the aim of the society was to empower it's members to buy homes. The society grew...
Meanwhile, in 1860, The Peterborough Provincial Benefit Society was founded by railway workers at the local Corn Exchange. Its aim was to enable members to build their own homes in the city, and in 1896 it registered under the Building Societies Act. The first branch office was opened at March, Cambridgeshire in 1961, and by 1962 the decision was made to change the name to the Peterborough Building Society. This new society went on to absorb King's Lynn Building Society in 1967, Stamford Building Society in 1980, and Argyle Building Society in 1985.
In 1986 the Peterborough Building Society and the Norwich Building Society merged and became Norwich and Peterborough Building Society.
On 1st November 2011 N&P merged with Yorkshire Building Society, one of the largest Building Societies in the UK. Following the merger YBS Group retained the Norwich & Peterborough Building Society brand as a trading name and continued to offer a full range of financial products to new and existing customers.
In 2018 we made some important changes and Yorkshire Building Society (YBS) became our principal high street brand. We no longer open new accounts under the N&P brand. We also made a decison to close the N&P current account; all N&P share dealing, home insurance and savings accounts became YBS accounts and N&P branches were changed to YBS branches.
YBS Group has continued to demonstrate its financial strength despite the tough economic conditions, while delivering value and financial security to its members. More information about Yorkshire Building Society can be found on its website www.ybs.co.uk.

We’ve built our strategy around our purpose of providing Real Help with Real Life. For us, as a building society, it means delivering three central ambitions: helping people to have a place to call home and helping them towards greater financial wellbeing, whilst creating long-term value for our members.Your Society page
