Who we are
At Norwich & Peterborough our goal is to do everything in our power to make sure our customers are in control of money. We aim:
- To be more than a building society offering mortgages and savings.
- To be the preferred alternative to big banks.
- To instil pride and commitment in all our staff.
- To make a real difference to our customers’ lives.
Your local building society
Norwich & Peterborough has over 800 staff in branches and support functions at the Peterborough Office, most coming from the local community. We aim to deliver a first class service to more than half a million customers, most of whom live near their Norwich & Peterborough branch.
We've come a long way in 150 years
Our story began in the year 1852, with the establishment of The Norwich and District Provident Permanent Benefit Building and Freehold Land Society - Later renamed as the somewhat more manageable Norwich Building Society, the aim of the society was to empower it's members to buy homes. The society grew...
Meanwhile, in 1860, The Peterborough Provincial Benefit Society was founded by railway workers at the local Corn Exchange. Its aim was to enable members to build their own homes in the city, and in 1896 it registered under the Building Societies Act. The first branch office was opened at March, Cambridgeshire in 1961, and by 1962 the decision was made to change the name to the Peterborough Building Society. This new society went on to absorb King's Lynn Building Society in 1967, Stamford Building Society in 1980, and Argyle Building Society in 1985.
In 1986 the Peterborough Building Society and the Norwich Building Society merged and became Norwich and Peterborough Building Society.
In March 2011 the Board entered into merger discussions with Yorkshire Building Society. Ultimately the shareholding and borrowing members voted in favour of the proposal and, in November of 2011, following FSA approval, Norwich & Peterborough Building Society officially merged with Yorkshire Building Society and became part of the Yorkshire Group.
Today, Norwich & Peterborough Building Society has a distinctive and active presence in the UK, and is a proud part of YBS Group.
The YBS Group
On 1st November 2011 N&P merged with Yorkshire Building Society, the UK's second largest building society. Following the merger YBS Group retained the Norwich & Peterborough Building Society brand as a trading name and continue to offer a full range of financial products to new and existing customers.
YBS Group is comprised of Yorkshire Building Society, the trading names under which it operates (Chelsea Building Society, the Chelsea, Norwich & Peterborough Building Society, N&P and Egg) and its subsidiary companies. Collectively the group employs 4,100 staff throughout the UK and services 3.5 million members.
It has continued to demonstrate its financial strength despite the tough economic conditions, while delivering value and financial security to its members. More information about Yorkshire Building Society can be found on its website www.ybs.co.uk
