Foreign currency transfers

Though most receiving banks don’t charge to accept transfers in the designated currency of the beneficiary bank account, some may charge a fee. If you need to send a specific amount, you may need to check with the receiving bank for any special instructions.

Avoid sterling transfers

Most receiving banks charge a fee for accepting Sterling transfers. That’s why we recommend you choose a foreign currency transfer, as it insures your beneficiary will receive the full amount and it will cost you less.

How to make an overseas payment

You can transfer money to over 100 countries abroad direct by taking identification to your local branch, or sending a letter with all the payment details and identification to:

You will need the beneficiary’s BIC / SWIFT code and IBAN number for transfers to other European countries. For transfers to the rest of world,  please check with the beneficiary to ensure all details are included to allow the receiving bank to transmit the payment.

Please see the proving your identity page for acceptable identification documents. If your request is received before 11.30am, it should be dealt with that day. Any requests received after that time will be processed the next working day (unless this is a Friday or Saturday).
